takeCHARGE Newfoundland and Labrador!
Getting the best value from your energy dollar is important to you. It’s important to us too!
takeCHARGE is a joint initiative between Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Newfoundland Power that is aimed at providing Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with information, tools and rebate programs to assist them in using energy wisely. We encourage you to take charge and take action in your homes and businesses to reduce the energy you use and save money.
Hydro’s Isolated Systems Energy Efficiency Program
Hydro is launching a new three-year energy efficiency program to help residential and commercial customers in Hydro’s isolated systems save energy.
This program will be offered in Hydro communities served by diesel system on the island and in Labrador. The program will kick-off in spring 2012 in L'Anse au Loup and the coast of Labrador. The program will be offered in Hydro's northern and Labrador regions in 2012 and its island isolated communities in 2013. Customers will be made aware of when the program is available in their area through direct mail, advertising, a website, social media and community meetings.
Hydro has engaged Summerhill Group, an external consultant based in Toronto that specializes in environmental consulting and program design, to develop this program. They will manage the program delivery on the ground, engaging residential and commercial customers in multiple ways to suit each community’s needs. Employment opportunities with training on direct installation of energy efficient products will be available to local residents.
The program will increase availability and awareness of energy efficient technologies in rural communities, with the expectation of reducing energy consumption over three years by approximately 5,337 megawatt hours (MWh), which is a reduction of approximately eight per cent of energy currently generated.
Direct Install Visits
To help customers served by diesel systems save energy, they will be provided several energy efficient products such as compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and low flow shower heads that will be directly installed in their home or business free of charge.
Community energy representatives will contact residents by phone and through door-to-door visits to set up free direct install appointments. Homeowners will also be able to book a visit at community meetings or by contacting their local community energy representative.
During the direct install visit, customers will also receive information on the benefits of the products installed and how to use the products properly to help gain the greatest energy savings. Mail-in rebates will be provided for eligible purchases such as ENERGY STAR® qualified fridges, clothes washers and televisions. Hydro will also engage local retailers in the program in an effort to increase the communities’ access to energy efficient products.
This program builds on the existing takeCHARGE program, which is a partnership between Newfoundland Power and Hydro to help raise awareness of the importance of using energy wisely and encourage people to take action to reduce their energy usage. The takeCHARGE rebate programs will be promoted to increase participation in those programs wit
hin the isolated systems for those who qualify.
As Hydro’s Isolated Systems Energy Efficiency Program is developed, updates will be posted on Hydro’s website. Please check back for further updates.
